VPN Connected but No Internet? Four Checks to Try

A VPN can show “connected” while web pages refuse to load. That status means the app has established a VPN connection; it does not guarantee that traffic is getting through. The cause could be your Wi-Fi connection, an unavailable VPN server, a DNS problem or a setting that blocks traffic when the tunnel fails.

For a fuller troubleshooting route, try this guide to VPN connection and Wi-Fi problems. Its sections on “VPN not working on Wi-Fi” and “Specific sites and apps fail with VPN” match two useful starting points: whether everything stops working or only certain services fail.

1. Check whether the underlying connection works.
On a trusted network, briefly disconnect the VPN and try an ordinary web page, avoiding sensitive activity during the test. If it still fails, troubleshoot the Wi-Fi first. Reconnect to the network and check whether another device can get online. Hotel, café and train Wi-Fi may require a sign-in page before a VPN can work.

2. Change one VPN setting at a time.
Reconnect using a different server. If that makes no difference, try another connection protocol offered in the app’s settings. Some networks restrict particular types of VPN traffic. Test after each change so you know what helped, and restore the previous setting if it makes things worse.

3. Check for deliberate blocking.
A kill switch can stop internet access when the VPN tunnel drops, even if the app’s display has not caught up. Look for connection warnings and try reconnecting before changing that protection. If you recently added custom DNS settings, return them to automatic and test again. DNS faults can prevent website names from resolving.

4. Separate a single app failure from a full outage.
Try a few unrelated websites and another app. If most work, your connection is probably functioning: the affected service may reject VPN traffic or have its own fault. Try another VPN server and restart the affected app before resetting network settings.

Keep a note of what works with the VPN on and off. That simple comparison makes the next troubleshooting step much clearer and gives support something useful to investigate.
