Blue Century Records presents – Unlucky 13 Blues – Bad Luck & Superstitions in the Blues

Why did blues singers fear black cats, unlucky numbers and mysterious curses? Why did they sing about hoodoo, jinxes and fortunes that never seemed to change? Unlucky 13 Blues – Bad Luck & Superstitions in the Blues explores the rich world of folklore and superstition. The collection spans the 1920s to the 1960s. It brings together thirteen remarkable recordings inspired by luck, fate, omens and the supernatural.

Blues Folklore and Belief

These songs offer more than great music. They also provide a fascinating glimpse into the beliefs and traditions of the American South. Long before horror films and television ghost stories, blues musicians sang about signs, omens, charms and supernatural forces. Moreover, these recordings reveal how folklore shaped everyday life. As a result, they provide a deeper understanding of blues culture and storytelling. Carefully restored from original sources, this collection is perfect for Halloween listening. It also appeals to anyone interested in the folklore of the blues. Finally, whether you believe in bad luck or not, these thirteen timeless recordings prove that superstition has always had a place in the blues.
