Mississippi Blues – Vol. 1 (1928–1937) presents 24 rare tracks from the heart of the Delta. These are some of the most powerful and mysterious voices in blues history.
- Haunting guitar ballads
- Gritty vocals and raw piano blues
Geeshie Wiley’s eerie “Pick Poor Robin Clean” appears on the Sinners film soundtrack (Sony Pictures). Long shrouded in mystery, Wiley’s music speaks with haunting clarity.
A key highlight is Louise Johnson. She recorded four piano blues tracks in 1930 at Paramount’s studio in Grafton, Wisconsin. Son House and Charley Patton were there too. While House spoke on the recordings, Johnson played the piano. Her playing is bold, fierce, and unforgettable.
Also featured:
- Mattie Delaney
- The Mississippi Moaner (Isaiah Nettles)
- Mississippi Bracy (likely gospel artist Caldwell Bracy)
Each track crackles with energy. Each artist brings the pre-war Mississippi blues to life.
This is Mississippi Blues – Vol. 1 (1928–1937). And it is essential listening.
