RARE COUNTRY BLUES VOL. 1 – FROM THE SLEEVE NOTES
A collection of exceptionally rare pre-war blues recordings by artists who left behind only a small recorded legacy.
Seth Richard, probably from Bedford County, Virginia, made two pre-war recordings before returning to the studio in 1943 under the name Skoodle Dum Doo and Sheffield.
Texas songster Charlie Kyle recorded six titles in Memphis in 1928 before disappearing into obscurity, while the mysterious Freezone is known from just one issued recording, “Indian Squaw Blues.”
William Harris recorded two titles for Brunswick in Chicago in 1930. His “Never Drive A Stranger From Your Door,” driven by striking slide guitar, draws upon the traditional “Make Me Up A Pallet On Your Floor.”
The collection also includes the complete surviving recordings of Knoxville singer Leola Manning, whose remarkable story we have recently explored in depth.
