Sinners And Saints (1926-1931)-DOCD-5106

Sinners and Saints: Complete Recorded Works 1926–1931 is part of the Sinners and Saints Document Records series—a curated collection exploring the sacred and secular sounds of early Black Southern performers. These recordings, made between 1926 and 1931, document the intersection of gospel, work songs, blues, medicine show ballads, and vaudeville.

From unaccompanied track-lining chants to harmonised street-corner sermons, this set brings together voices rarely heard today. Highlights include the T.C.I. Section Crew’s Section Gang Song, one of the only commercially recorded railroad work songs, Freeman Stowers’ wild harmonica imitations, and the gospel-infused advertisement Ice Cold Nugrape by the Nugrape Twins.

Other standout artists include Pink Anderson and Simmie Dooley, George Owens, Blind Roger Hays, Lonnie Coleman, and Will Bennett—songsters whose styles helped shape early blues and spiritual traditions.

The Sinners and Saints Document Records series celebrates these recordings not just as music, but as memory—capturing a lived tradition, a moment of transition, and the birth of something enduring.
